Community guidance

Use TootyToot as an informal community lift-coordination tool.

This page explains the way TootyToot is intended to be used in the UK: as a community-led way for members to coordinate lifts they choose to help with, not as a taxi, private hire, dispatch, booking, or commercial ride-hailing service.

Informal coordination

TootyToot helps members coordinate informal lifts within trusted communities. It is not a taxi or private hire service.

Lift availability is never guaranteed. Members arrange things directly with each other and remain responsible for their own decisions.

TootyToot does not guarantee that a lift will be available. It does not assign a vehicle or another member to you.

Insurance and non-profit use

If you offer lifts, you are responsible for checking that your motor insurance covers this type of informal lift sharing or cost sharing.

TootyToot does not provide motor insurance unless explicitly stated elsewhere. Do not offer lifts for profit.

Any contribution between members should be limited to genuine journey costs and should not create a profit, fare, entitlement, or transport business.

Member responsibilities

Members remain responsible for their own conduct, licences, vehicle condition, route choices, insurance, and the decision to proceed with a lift.

TootyToot does not currently carry out formal ID checks, DBS checks, or other formal verification. Use your own judgment and your community’s moderation processes.

Community-first boundaries

TootyToot is intended for trusted communities, not an open public transport marketplace. Communities should be moderated and local in scope.

Repeated commercial-style offering, advertising transport services, or asking for payment beyond cost sharing can be flagged for review by community organisers.

Practical reminder

  • Request a lift only when you genuinely need help from your community.
  • Offer a lift only when you were already making that journey or are freely choosing to help.
  • Use the message area to agree details directly with the other member before travelling.
  • Do not use TootyToot to run a taxi, private hire, courier, or paid transport service.
